CATFISH
1) Which type of documentary mode is catfish, give examples as to how you know this?
Informative - Because Nev was involved in every part of it, the filming, the questions, the storyline etc.
2) Explain your understanding of the film's title 'Catfish'. What roles did Yaniv and Angela play in each others lives.
I think my understanding of the title "Catfish" became a lot clearer towards the end of the film when Vince was talking about what a Catfish actually is. It means that you will meet people in your life time that will keep you on your toes. Whether it's in a positive way or negative. However, the most recent definition since the making of the TV show Catfish is someone that pretends to be someone they are not online to get things out of it. I think a Catfish is someone who is confused and are lacking something in their lives so they have to play roll in someone else's to get what they've always desired, be it love, money, popularity, sex.
Yaniv (Nev) came across at the start of the documentary as just a guy with a good set of close friends who lived in New York in his apartment and production studio but with no lady. It must be incredibly sad being so lonely in such a big city of people, so the attention he started to get from "Megan" obviously started to fill a hole as he admitted to having deep conversations with her, honest and healing conversations. So in Nev's life, Angela, who he thought was Megan, played this young beautiful girl who he actually caught feelings for. She was someone he could connect with on a very intimate level. He had his hope's up that something could be between them but when he finally found out that actually Angela was Megan, the roles completely changed and Angela just became someone who framed Nev and really hurt his feelings. Angela however had Nev as her distraction in life. She has a lot of kids, a lot of stress, especially when she has to look after her 2 handicapped sons and she created this relationship with Nev as a distraction to all of that because he made her happy, he enhanced her inner artist as she was just as passionate about him as she was with her art work. Her artwork are what kept her passionate, it was something she was good at. Also the link between Nev filming so many dance shows and Angela said that she had always wanted to pursue a dancing hobby or career, Nev showed her things that she had need seen before and that increased the connection she had for him. Angela pretending to be Megan and having a soft side for Nev also showed that maybe she was missing out on an intimate relationship with her Husband, maybe they haven't had to have one like they used too as their kids require too much of their time. The roles they played were each very similar. They both wanted love and affection, except the only twist was one of them was not who they said they were.
3) In what ways is Catfish similar to or different from other documentaries you have seen?
Catfish is similar to other documentaries I have seen as it is very interactive with the people within the documentary and the viewers. The way it is filmed, with hand held camera's that they take everywhere with them to give viewers an insight to what things are like from every aspect/angle of the scene, Catfish is very similar to The Most Hated Family in America - which is written and presented by Louis Theroux.
4) There has been some debate over the authenticity of the events in Catfish (research this if you are not aware). How does that affect the way you feel about the film? Do you think the film intentionally blurs the line between documentary and drama?
5) How is the making of the documentary as much a part of the film as the main storyline?
